Miami Carnival

When you hear the word “CARNIVAL” what comes to mind? Ferris wheel! Funnel Cake! And tons of games! Well you’re in for a surprise! The Miami Broward Carnival will completely change your life if it hasn’t already. I’m talking about costumes, parties, road march, steel pan and of course the music.

Each year as a part of the Columbus Day weekend celebration, Island masses and people from all over the world dress up in carnival outfits for the Miami Broward One Carnival. Both Miami and Broward County fused together to put on one of the biggest island celebrations in America each year. The main event is held at the Miami-Dade County Fairgrounds, along with other parties and celebrations leading up to “jump day”, which is the Carnival parade along a six mile route throughout the city; wining, jumping and having a great time. Now if you ask me that’s about a weeks’ worth of workout. This heart pumping, spectacular festival celebrates the rich culture, traditions, heritage and art of the Caribbean people.

The Miami Carnival never disappoints. Each year there is a different theme and multiple bands from which to purchase costumes. Last year’s theme was “The Spirit of Carnival”. They saw over 50,000 soca warriors with hope of out doing each prior year making it bigger and better. Over the years we have seen steelbands compete for the title of “Panorama” champions. Carnival Trucks are a very exciting part of the road march. Each of these Carnival Trucks are equipped with some VIP patrons and DJs along with amazing entertainers such as Machel Montano, Fayon Lyons, Destra Garcia and Beenie Man, just to name a few. The Steel bands, Costumes and the Music Truck are judged with expert judges who come from all over the world to cast their vote and crown the titles.

We can’t forget about the food. Oh the flavorful traditional dishes from islands like Jamaica, Haiti, and Trinidad among others. From the tasty scrumptious Jerk chicken, Jerk Pork, Curry and stew dishes to uniquely flavorful beverages and Rum. My mouth is watering as we speak.

If you’re like me you can’t wait to see the bands that will be playing “Mas” and ‘I’m ready to fete till all mi money done.’
